Backpack Of Love, cotton and polyester bed sheets from op shops and friends, steam dyed with rusted fencing wire and leaves, ceramic oxide, wire and hay, 2020 - 2021

The panels of fabric of which I am sewing new JN Sacs are made from this big bag. I know I have been saying for months that they will be available - and they will be soon. Online soon. For those have ordered, they are being sewed rn.

“I wanted to do a portrait of what I love and making bags last year gave me purpose. I found a process I enjoyed, buying sheets from the senior op shop volunteers. I laundered and ironed them, steam dyed them in leaves and sticks I found around. I wrapped my wares for delivery, took them to the post office and dispatched them to friends across the world. The Kathmandu Unisac, mum bought when I was in primary school, was hers then mine. Now in my 30s, I still have it and I decided to make an enlarged sculpture of it, one hundred times bigger and from the sheets I had collected. From the jangling over time, both zippers had fallen off last year. I cast them in bronze, immensely heavy. The lay on the ground of the gallery. I wanted to footnote the piece with a photo. I thought about all the collages I made with Nick in our covid lockdown country-city exchange last year. Some were personal images of past loves and partners. Then misc found stuff. The collages were poems for those passed times, because last year, time paused. I printed out a photo I took of a photo collage by filmmaker Curt McDowell in a group exhibition at Participant Inc, titled “Things” curated by Bryan Nordeen. I travelled to New York in 2016, when I fell in love, that’s when I saw it. This time proved fruitful in making art. This year, I staged his photo, and got my friends Jacqui Shelton and Ella Sowinska to both shoot me. The intimacy and exposure of McDowell’s body on his mattress, the doubling of himself, his bottom, the birds eye view, his gayze, a doll on the bed. I wanted to make similar and have my bums facing the bag.”
